Teacher-student communication during instrumental lesson
This is a summary of the dissertation "Interaction and learning. A sudy of music instrument teaching".
ARTT
A tool for transcribing and analyzing videorecordet interaction.
Theoretical perspectives on designing a study of interaction
The main object of the paper is to discuss how multiple compatible theories are combined in the current study for application to different theoretical levels.

In cooperation with Sonart Design we are developing a new tool for analyzing video data, the VideoAnalyzer, free to download. This software is available both for Windows and Mac users. The open source code facilitates further development for different needs. This program is developed from the "Analyzing and reporting Transcription Tool", ARTT, that was made for the research study.

ARTT is a' software based tool for transcription and systematic analyzing of video recorded lessons. Speech, gesture and music is transcribed in detail and analyzed for identification of pattern of interaction and learning.

Click for larger image! ARTT is useful during the three different levels of the study: descriptive, analyzing and interpretation. In the descriptive level ARTT is useful for the ease of registration of events in the video recorded material.

The interaction is categorized in speech, music and gestures. The video film is shown in its own window on the monitor and the three different ways of communication from teacher and the student respectively is transcribed in details in a third window.
The transcription is done directly in a excel sheet where the analytic coding of the registered events is done easier. The excel sheet has multiple functions for displaying the difference of results. This makes the results more illustrative which also makes the big amount of data more easy to survey. The presentation of the results derived from ARTT makes it even easier for others to comprehend a neutral description of the interaction to a discussion about how different patterns of interaction affects the learning.

An important reason for developing a tool for analysis utilising widespread office software, rather than a dedicated video analysis software package, is to make research related methods accessible to teacher-training programs, professional development programs in schools, as well as to practitioners and an interested public.
